A press depends on its authors. We want to offer more than '4 the Luv' to our contributors, but we are a new press with half a shoestring to budget with. If you were seeking publication with us, which of the modest rewards below would you prefer?

The problem is, you didn't say whether that "complimentary copy" was an e-book or a print book. I would take a print copy over a $5 check, but the check over an e-copy. I don't know about everyone else, but to me it makes a difference.

I'd assume the complementary copy means a print book and that the small payment only would include an e-copy (if only an "unfinished" .pdf of the whole book -- including contents, bios etc. -- sent to all contributors for proofing purposes, in which case that would be explained so those who wished would know to save it). Otherwise I might not be that interested at all (though in some cases, if reprints are accepted, and something else interests me in the book I might make an exception -- charity anthologies come to mind). That having been said, though, how about giving your contributors a choice between methods of payment once they've been accepted? (If you couldn't do that, I'm with James H. in that I'd take a print book over a $5 check. But a $20 check, on the other hand....)

Thank you for asking! I DID mean a print copy of the book. It sounds like I need to do a new poll if our publications prove successful and we can offer more. :)
